History

The history of Jiul Petroşani goes back to 1919, when the club was founded as Clubul Atletic al Minerilor din Petroşani (Athletic Club of Petroşani Miners).

In 1925 Jiul was runners-up in the Liga I.

Most of its history it played in the Liga I and Liga II, but recently it relegated for the very first time in history to the Liga IV.

Jiul Petroşani won the Romania Cup in 1974 and was a runner-up in 1972. In 1979, Jiul was a runner-up in the Balkans Cup.

Sponsored by the miners' union in the '90's, its chairman for a few years was Miron Cozma, the miners' union leader.
